Summer Books and Movies

It’s almost the end of summer. Do you miss the Libraries yet? You don’t have to be on campus to access books and movies from the Libraries. This summer we’ve acquired some new collections for your reading, listening, and watching pleasure, and you can enjoy them anywhere with a Wifi connection.

Popular Ebooks and Audiobooks

Students who hang out on the ground floor of John M. Olin Library are probably already familiar with our PopLit collection, which has popular print titles in the genres of mystery, horror, science fiction, fantasy, romance, graphic novels, non-fiction, and more. With the Overdrive collection, we now have a similar collection in ebook/audiobook form. The Overdrive collection provides access to thousands of titles that you can stream from the Libby app.

To start using the collection, simply download the app to your preferred device or visit on your browser, click “Sign in with my card,” and select Washington University in St. Louis as your library. You’ll be prompted to authenticate with your WUSTL Key. If you have any trouble accessing the collection, don’t hesitate to Ask us! Do you already use Libby with your local public library? You can add WashU as an additional library card to expand your choices!

Not sure where to start? There’s no wrong place, but celebrity memoirs provide some frothy fun for the end of summer. The Woman Inside Me by Britney Spears and read by Michelle Williams is a recent favorite of mine. Looking for something more highbrow? The New York Times recently released a list of the 100 best books of the 21st century, and many of the selections have been recently added to our Overdrive collection.

Streaming Movies

While Olin Library is home to an impressive collection of DVDs, we are starting to acquire more streaming licenses for films you can view on any device. We now subscribe to the Digital Campus Top 1000 Film Collection, an online library of films that range from classics like Citizen Kane to recent hits like Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Academic Video Online is another great online collection of streaming films we subscribe to. While many of the videos are more educational, there are many great offbeat independent films and documentaries. I personally found the new documentary The Arc of Oblivion deeply entertaining.

Finally, don’t sleep on Kanopy! We don’t have access to the full collection as we chiefly use it to license individual films for classroom use. However, any film we license for a class can be enjoyed by the whole campus community. The limited selection we have is particularly strong in foreign films.

Enjoy the last weeks of summer! And, enjoy our new collections of ebooks, audiobooks, and streaming films any time of year.
