James E. and Joan Singer Schiele Print Collection

The James E. and Joan Singer Schiele Print Collection consists of Civil War prints and other historical images representing 19th-century American history, focusing on abolition, the Civil War, reconstruction, and westward expansion.

A highlight of the collection is a set of thirty-six Kurz & Allison Civil War prints. These prints make up a visual overview of historical events during one of the nation’s most tumultuous times and provide a strong background for cultural and historical studies. The Chicago firm of Kurz & Allison is well known for its production of commemorative prints of American historical scenes.

The collection of over 450 prints includes portraits, battle scenes, political cartoons, newspaper and magazine illustrations, reproductions of paintings, and original artwork. The collection highlights various printing and illustration techniques, including woodcut, lithography, and chromolithography.
