Winter Closure

Multiple Danforth campus libraries will be closed and inaccessible to patrons from December 21 until January 2. Read on for more details.

Research Studio Policy

The Research Studio is a computer lab located on Level A of Olin Library. The Studio houses seven computer terminals loaded with specialized software, including ArcGIS, SPSS, NVivo, and ATLAS.ti (see a full software list on the Research Studio LibGuide). The purpose of the Research Studio is to provide broad access to advanced research software and analytics tools to allow the WashU campus community to more easily engage in data-related activities.

Jump to the Virtual Research Studio for more information about scheduling remote access to Research Studio workstations.

Research Studio Computer Lab Usage

While all research-related activities are welcome, priority is given to users with data-intensive projects which require specialized software on the Research Studio terminals.

Operating Hours

Users access the Research Studio via swipe access using a valid WashU ID card and can log into the computer workstations with an active WUSTL Key. See the Library Hours page for the operational hours of the physical Research Studio computer lab space.

Any interruption to standard operating hours will be posted in advance.

User Expectations for the Research Studio

  • Access to the Research Studio is only through swipe access with a valid WashU ID card during operational hours. Users should not allow others to follow them into the room without swiping their WashU ID card.
  • Research Studio users should not log into machines marked as otherwise in use.
  • Users should adhere to all WashU and WashU Libraries policies for technology use.
  • Covered drinks are only allowed in the Research Studio per the Libraries’ food and drink policy.
  • Users cannot remove any equipment or materials provided in the Research Studio.
  • Users are expected to notify a Libraries staff member if there are issues in the Research Studio (e.g., broken equipment, faulty software, damaged furniture).
  • Users are expected to depart the Research Studio by its closing time and plan their space usage according to its operational hours.

Users who fail to meet expectations

Users found to be in violation of any term stated in this policy may be banned from further use of the Research Studio.

Virtual Research Studio

A limited number of workstations in the Research Studio are reservable for remote access. This allows users to connect to the software and resources through a virtual desktop environment.

Virtual access to the Research Studio is available 24/7 and by appointment only.

User Expectations for Virtual Research Studio

  • Users will schedule an appointment via the provided form and process. Users log into the virtual desktop with a valid WUSTL Key.
  • Users should log into the virtual desktop only during their scheduled appointment times.
  • Users are expected to save all work outside of the virtual desktop (e.g., in Box or Dropbox). It is strongly recommended that they save work regularly to their external storage solution throughout their session.
  • Users must log off the virtual desktop promptly when their appointment ends.
  • Users are expected to respect other users’ appointment times.
  • Users should adhere to all WashU and WashU Libraries policies for technology use.

Users who fail to meet expectations

Users found to be in violation of any stated term in this policy may be banned from using the Research Studio in the future.
