  • Becker Medical Library has arranged trial access for WU to InCites, a research analytics platform produced by Clarivate Analytics (formerly Thomson Reuters). The significant expansion of open hours at Olin Library is just one example of many improvements made as a result of past surveys. Now, three years later, it’s that time again — to gather student input to guide future efforts. Take our survey!Library staff members are always eager to hear from users, but the survey is an especially important opportunity to share one’s thoughts on specific aspects of the Libraries. It only takes about 10 minutes to fill out.“Students don’t always realize what a powerful voice the survey gives them,” says Carol Mollman, assessment coordinator. “We received over a thousand comments on the last survey, which translated into big changes.   • SCOAP3 Extension – CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, and the ‘host organization’ of SCOAP3 announced that it has signed contracts with 10 leading scientific publishers and learned societies to extend this Open Access initiative for three more years. This was the last step for this unique global Open Access partnership to continue supporting authors worldwide through at least December 2019.  Eight journals will participate in this three-year extension of the initiative, of which five are published by learned societies. All articles will be published Open Access in perpetuity, under Creative Commons CC-BY licenses at no direct cost to any authors. In addition to availability on the publishers’ platforms, articles will be also available on the SCOAP3 Repository, enabling partners to build value-added services.
  • Electronic Backfiles – We now have electronic access in perpetuity to Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research (1957-present), Physics Letters (1962-present), and Physics Reports (1971-present).  I plan to remove the backfiles from the Physics Library collection.  Please let me know if you need me to maintain the paper access to those titles.

arXiv Updates – As part of its 25th anniversary vision-setting process, the arXiv team at Cornell University Library conducted a user survey in April 2016 to seek input from the global user community about the current services and future directions. They received 36,000 responses, representing arXiv’s diverse community. Library Inventory – The annual inventory of Physics Library material was done in May. The good news is that some of the lost and missing books from last year did show up.  However, there were still some rather large losses.  It is difficult to tell if the thief has stopped stealing from the collection. One hundred thirty eight books have been identified as lost or missing.  Books that are missing two years in a row, or paid for by the patron who lost it, are considered to be lost. Eighty five books which are now considered lost can be found at: [http://catalog.wustl.edu/search/r?SEARCH=Physics+Library+Lost+Books]. Please check the list of lost books to see if there are any which should be replaced and let me know. In addition to the 85 lost books, there are 53 other books which are missing. Any help in recovering any of these titles will be greatly appreciated.

Physical Review Fluids – The American Physical Society (APS) announced that the first articles from their newest journal, Physical Review Fluids, are now available. Physical Review Fluids is dedicated to publishing innovative research that will significantly advance the fundamental understanding of fluid dynamics and expands the scope of the APS journals to include additional areas of fluid dynamics research.

SCOAP3 initiative extended for three more years -The SCOAP3 collaboration announced the extension of this Open Access initiative for three more years, from January 2017 through December 2019.  Following the success of the first years of operation of SCOAP3, representatives of the 3,000 SCOAPpartners in 47 countries, ten scholarly publishers and CERN as the host organisation of the collaboration have now agreed the terms for this continuation.  For more information, go to: https://scoap3.org/scoap3-initiative-extended-for-three-more-years/

Serials Review – FY2017
The Libraries are now reviewing subscriptions annually to ensure we are spending library money most effectively. This year we are concentrating on titles where we seem to be spending a lot more on the subscription than we would spend on Interlibrary Loans based on annual usage from that journal. (Interlibrary Loan is very efficient lately; my recent requests have all arrived within 48 hours. If you haven’t used it recently, you should definitely try again when you need things we don’t have.)I haven’t had a chance to review ALL physics journal titles yet, but the following are possible candidates for cancellation.  Please let me know which of the following you regularly use.  Some of the data provided by Olin Library has been inaccurate, so my usage figures may be incorrect.  All of these are listed as having an average of 200 or less uses in a year.

Gravitational Wave Discovery – An Open Access Publishing Story
Riding the Wave, from Inside Higher Education, reports on publishing decisions surrounding the gravitation wave story by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) scientists. They voted on where to publish and chose Physical Review Letters. Later this was shared by CalTech librarian Gail Clement on a library discussion list:

As a side note, when the APS went down on the day of the gravitational waves announcement due to excessively heavy traffic to Physical Review Letters, the Caltech Repository offered mirror access and the Caltech strategic communications staff used our repository copy in all press releases, advising “Because the journal’s website is being slammed, it turns out the Caltech library’s page for the paper is a more accessible source for the PDF version.”

APS Journal Changes – The American Physical Society has renamed two journal titles and separated out the descriptive subheadings from the Physical Review A-E journals effective January 1, 2016. Removing Special Topics integrates Physical Review Accelerators and Beams and Physical Review Physics Education Research into the Physical Review family and better emphasizes their content.  In addition, APS has added a new title, Physical Review Fluids, which will publish its first issue in Spring 2016.  Physical Review Fluids expands the scope of the APS journals to include additional areas of fluid dynamics research and will include both Research Articles and Rapid Communications.

arXiv Update – arXiv has posted a January 2016 update with a brief summary of their 2015 activities and plans for 2016.

Open Journal of Astrophysics – An astrophysicist has launched a low-cost community peer-review platform that circumvents traditional scientific publishing.  The Open Journal of Astrophysics is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal for research in astrophysics and cosmology which works in tandem with manuscripts posted on arXiv. Researchers submit their papers from arXiv directly to the journal, which evaluates them by conventional peer review. Accepted versions of the papers are then re-posted to arXiv and assigned a DOI, and the journal publishes links to them.

Research Ideas and Outcomes (RIO) – Earlier this year the Research Ideas & Outcomes (RIO) journal was launched. RIO’s mission is to open up the entire research cycle — by publishing project proposals, data, methods, workflows, software, project reports and research articles. These will all be made freely available on a single collaborative platform.  The first grant proposal made openly available on RIO was published by a physicist — Finnish-born Toma Susi, who is based at the University of Vienna in Austria.  An interview with Susi about his proposal, and his experience of publishing on RIO is available here: http://poynder.blogspot.co.uk/2015/12/the-oa-interviews-toma-susi-physicist.html

iTeach Symposium – The 2016 iTeach symposium will feature interactive presentations and discussions on topics such as applying cognitive science, integrating and evaluating active learning, engaging students with group work, and fostering inclusion in the classroom. ORCID Required for Royal Society Manuscript Submission – Beginning January 1, 2016, the Royal Society (publisher ofPhilosophical Transactions and Proceedings of the Royal Society) will require the submitting author to provide an ORCID identifier as part of the manuscript submission process. ORCID provides a unique identifier for all researchers that can be linked to their different research works and activities across multiple platforms. It also serves to distinguish authors with similar names and simplify searching of publications databases (such as PubMed, Scopus, etc.) to avoid retrieving articles by authors with similar names. Close to 1.8 million researchers have already created their ORCID iD. The service is non-profit and community driven.  It takes less than a minute to register for an ORCID iD and it’s free of charge.
