Yarber was an Interlibrary Loan/Reserves assistant at Olin Library, where she was responsible for lending WU Libraries materials to resource-sharing partners. She determined if materials were available for shipment to other libraries and delivered journal articles electronically to faculty, staff, and students at research institutions across the world.

“Carolyn dedicated her professional life to Washington University,” said Deborah Ehrstein, head of Access at Olin Library. “Over the course of her career, Carolyn played a significant role in the work lives of numerous colleagues and students. Her contributions to the Interlibrary Loan/Reserves unit will be missed. ”

Yarber was a graduate of Sumner High School in St. Louis and attended Harris Teachers College (now Harris-Stowe State University). She was hired in the University Libraries as a typist in the Card Catalog Department in 1966 and worked in this position until 1967. She left the library but returned to the Catalog Department in 1968 as a Flexowriter typist and was promoted to senior typist. She worked as a data processing technician in Library Administration/Systems until 1991 when the position was eliminated because of changes in technology that made key punching obsolete. She was transferred to the Interlibrary Loan Department and worked in various positions during her 25 years in that department.

“I have valued knowing Carolyn as both a colleague and a friend and have shared many memorable experiences with her over the past 35 years,” said Associate University Librarian Virginia Dowsing Toliver. “I’ve always admired Carolyn’s perseverence, adaptability, and her strong work ethic. I will certainly miss our in-depth conversations on a variety of topics but am grateful that I had an opportunity to really get to know her over the years—we learned so much from each other.”

Yarber is survived by her daughter, Teresa, who is also an employee of WU Libraries.

A funeral service will be held at noon Thursday, December 15, 2016, with visitation from 11 a.m. to 11:50 a.m., at Wade Funeral Home Twin Chapel, 4800 Natural Bridge Ave. in St. Louis. Interment will follow the service in Lake Charles Park Cemetery, 7775 St. Charles Rock Road in Bel-Nor.
