Geography Awareness Week Spotlight: Geospatial Activities in Our Community

St. Louis is rich in geospatial knowledge and location-based technologies. In recent years, the momentum and excitement behind geospatial in St. Louis has been growing. Several organizations and groups are active in engaging geospatial professionals, enthusiasts, and supporters in the St. Louis metro region. Read on for more information about upcoming events and organizations that foster collaboration within the geospatial sphere in our community.

Lindenwood GIS Day

Our friends at Lindenwood University will be celebrating the GIS Day portion of Geography Awareness Week with a special virtual event on Tuesday, November 17. Sessions include:

  • Lindenwood GIS Interns share their Real Experience, Real Success
  • Charting the Course

Geospatial Institute at SLU

The Geospatial Institute at SLU was established in 2019 to bring together faculty and students from various disciplines to support and accelerate research, training, and innovation in geospatial science and technology. The Institute hosts many educational events, including the popular Geo-Resolution event, which took place in October.

St. Louis GIS Users Group (SLUG)

SLUG is a group of professionals in state, city, county, education, and private business that see the benefits of using a geographic information system in their organization. Meetings typically occur quarterly.

USGIF and the St. Louis Area Working Group (SLAWG)

The United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF) established the St. Louis Area Working Group (SLAWG) to bring together professionals from the government (both NGA and local), military, industry, academia, and community to create lasting educational and community pathways to geospatial degrees, certifications, and/or careers in the St. Louis region.

Women in Geospatial Technology Group

This group is open to all women in the St. Louis area interested in geospatial technology. Events focus on networking, building support, changing the world, and helping each other achieve success.

Geospatial Innovation Center at TREX

The Geospatial Innovation Center at TREX serves the geospatial community as a geotech incubator and learning and innovation space. The Center seeks to foster and support the expanding St. Louis geospatial ecosystem with events, resources and community involvement.

GeoFutures Report

During the summer of 2020, the St. Louis Development Corporation sponsored the “GeoFutures Report: A Strategic Roadmap for Advancing the Geospatial and Location Technology Cluster in the St. Louis Region.” The report outlines detailed pathways by which St. Louis can strengthen its position as the geospatial center of excellence over the next 10 years.
