One complete year of Student Life, the independent newspaper of Washington University in St. Louis, is now available through Open Scholarship at openscholarship.wustl.edu/studentlife. The 85 issues from 2006-07 are online with plans to eventually include the full run of the newspaper, which dates back to 1878.
This digitization project has been a collaborative effort between University Archives and Scholarly Publishing in the University Libraries and Ray Bush, general manager of Student Life. University Archivist Sonya Rooney worked with Bush on the need for a more searchable digital archive of the newspaper. A number of Student Life issues were scanned by Digital Imaging Specialist Teresa Yarber and student workers in Scholarly Publishing. Some issues on microfilm have already been scanned by a vendor, with more issues still to be scanned. Digital Library Services Manager Shannon Davis processed and OCRd all currently digitized issues of the newspapers. The OCR (Optical Character Recognition) allows for full-text searching of the PDFs. Digital Publishing and Digital Preservation Librarian Emily Stenberg created the collection in Open Scholarship and added the newspapers.
Issues of Student Life from 1878-1986 and 1988-2001 are currently only available on microfilm. Issues from 2007-present can be found at the Student Life website.
