Here's some information on the Kodak Image Library product for those interested in managing collections of images and multi-media content.

IMAGE MANAGEMENT

With the introduction of the KODAK Pro Photo CD System, professionals have access to an incredible amount of digital images. What they need is an efficient, low-cost way to manage these images, an image database system similar to that of the office database systems used for managing text. The KODAK Professional Image Library 30 was designed for this purpose-to enable professionals to search and retrieve digitized images stored on Pro Photo CD and Photo CD Master discs. It also allows you to store and retrieve electronic files stored on Writable CDs, and Photo CD Portfolio discs, as well as images stored on Photo CD Catalog discs.

High-Volume Storage and Quick Access. The KODAK Professional Image Library 30 stores, indexes, searches, and retrieves images from a variety of storage media. In addition to photo CD images, the user can import TIFF, PICT, EPS, PCX, and BMP file formats, as well as audio files and Quicktime movie clips. The Library stores up to 100 photo CD discs on line (60 Gigabytes), and supports greater than125,000 35 mm high-resolution Photo CD Master images in total (750 Gigabytes).

Utilizing user-defined fields and keywords, a customer with a Professional Image Library 30 can index, search and retrieve up to 30,000 thumbnail images in a single catalog. In addition, you have immediate automated access to high-resolution digital images on the MACINTOSH Computer or PC/Windows desktop via KODAK Professional PCD Jukebox Manager.

Diverse Applications. KODAK Professional Image Library 30 is useful wherever quick image retrieval, storage space, security and image safety are important business concerns. This includes museums, public and corporate libraries, stock photography agencies, medical and industrial photographers, government agencies, advertising agencies, and countless others. Currently most of these organizations maintain huge files of prints, negatives, and transparencies. Locating a particular image in such an environment can be time consuming, and costly.

Image Library Components. With a KODAK Professional Image Library 30, a user can search for a particular image, retrieve a high-resolution file of the image, and go on to make a color print, output on film, or import to ADOBE PhotoShop and save to other file formats. The user can also write that digital file to a KODAK Photo CD Portfolio Disc. The Image Library 30 consists of KODAK SHOEBOX Photo CD Image Manager, PCD Jukebox Manager (JBM), and an automated disc library called, KODAK Professional PCD Jukebox 100.

SEARCH: SHOEBOX Photo CD Image Manager. This is the System's image database manager. Using the SHOEBOX Photo CD Image Manager, an operator at the workstation uses keywords, attributes, and captions to search the library in one of three on-screen languages-English, French and German. The images that fit the search criteria are played in low-resolution thumbnails. The system can search 10,000 thumbnail images in 10 seconds or less.

When an image is selected, the PCD Jukebox Manager takes over and automatically locates the appropriate photo CD disc in the Jukebox. A higher-resolution version of the image is read from the disc within a few seconds, after which it can be viewed, exported to another software program, or output to a peripheral, such as a printer. The output can be in any of several resolutions-from thumbnail for selecting and previewing to higher-resolution for printing and enlarging.

In addition, the operator can use the software to save or search project files, zoom and crop images, and update multiple records in one operation. It is also possible to customize contact sheets by adjusting the size of thumbnails, and the brightness and background color of the contact sheet.

RETRIEVAL: KODAK Professional PCD Jukebox Manager. KODAK Professional PCD Jukebox Manager (JBM) is software that lets you access the CD Jukebox from the MACINTOSH or PC/Windows environment. The user just clicks on a CD icon on the desktop, and JBM puts the disc in the drive for immediate use. The JBM can manage 2 on-line magazines (100 discs), and >25 additional magazines off-line, a total of >1250 discs.

STORAGE: The KODAK Professional PCD Jukebox 100. The KODAK Professional PCD Jukebox 100 contains two removable magazines, each holding up to 50 discs, with disc access in about 6 seconds. The final capacity of the Jukebox, however, depends on which Photo CD format discs are chosen. For example, the Jukebox can hold 2500 4x5-inch film images (4k x 6k- resolution) on KODAK Pro Photo CD Master Discs; 10,000 35 mm images on standard KODAK Photo CD Master Discs; and access up to 100 KODAK Photo CD Catalog Discs with more than 5000 images each. (The Jukebox will also store data of any kind that's written on KODAK Writable CD.)

REQUIREMENTS Macintosh: System 7.0 or higher. Windows: IBM PC or compatible 386 or better, DOS 3.3 or higher, MICROSOFT Windows 3.1 or higher.
