Just a few comments on some of the recent issues:1. I would keep (at this point) networked databases for slide collections on a local level distinct from networked image databases on a global level, primarily because of copyright. That may change. Currently we are using 4D to serve 35,000 text records of slides. We have just begun to add images to the database, and so far have used PhotoCD, but may also use video capture for lower resolution images. The most interesting software development for slide and museum object management, EmbARK, by Digital Corporations Inc. in California also uses 4D very effectively.
2. Having set up a WWW Server for our library at the Institute of the Arts, I have become very conscious of database design when using images. Although the capacity on the international carrier between Australia and the US was doubled last week, I find it still takes a looooong time to call up images from overseas. With this in mind I am reconstructing our Australian Textiles html document to provide only one baby gif for each artist on the opening page with access to more images and some biographical information on the next level. If you do wish to view it, I would advise not to autoload images until we have trimmed the opening page. The first few entries are working very well. Our images are from PhotoCD (at the moment) which has just dropped in price from Aus$2.25 to Aus$1.30 per image.
