We are in the process of determining our hardware and software requirements
for an Electronic Reserve System. We have thousands of documents to scan
in. Each document has an average of 33 pages.

We want to scan the documents into a DOS directory (Novell system). An in-house program will get the index name from the library system and then use it to make up the DOS pathname and retrieve the document at print time.

We do not want to purchase a package system to handle all scanning, searching and printing. (Vendors are willing to sell us products which do much more than we require.) Can anyone suggest hardware and software to handle the following situation:

1. Scan in an entire document at a time (several pages as a group). 2. To save time, we need to avoid entering a file name as each page is scanned in. (e.g. enter one name for the document and the scanning software would choose a name for each page). 3. The document name would be a DOS sub-directory and each document page would be a file under it. e.g. econ101 page1.tif page2.tif page3.tif math202 page1.tif page2.tif etc.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
