GIS cover a wide range. There is the one from the CDC EpiMap which does run rather nicely on any PC. And then there are the ones that need a SPARC. I understand in the Sahel region they make use of this and satellite imagery in the agricultural sector.
And if they run on Unix systems you can use the very same ones to do some networking for you...
