I am sorry to butt in, but could someone explain to me how to solve this
catch-22 situation. If the US intervenes(interferes) bringing down
president Mobutu in Zaire, our friends from the left would condem this
act as another example of "imperialistic intervention". If the US does
not do anything then the chorus becomes "lack of care of the
US for the impoverished nations of the world."

I do not know much about Africa, being a latinamerican, but the same argument was (and still is) made in many instances regarding the relation between Latinamerica and the US.

Anyhow, why continue to bother about who did what and when, and lets re-direct the discussion to development, specially in this era of budget cutting. Maybe one of the areas is to try and identify where the aid should be targeted to minimize corruption and maximize results.
