Announcing the launching of the Cape Verdean-American / Cape Verde Home Page on the World Wide Web.

From New Bedford, Massachusetts, the "Cape Verdean Capital of the USA", comes the CAPE VERDEAN-AMERICAN / REPUBLIC OF CAPE VERDE (UNOFFICIAL) HOME PAGE, created by Richard Leary of the Information Systems Technology Group at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center/Newport, RI and under development in collaboration with Raymond Almeida, Senior Program Advisor at the Smithsonian Institution for this summer's "Cape Verdean Connection" Folklife Festival, and with the Cape Verdean-American community of New Bedford, particularly: Ronald Barboza, Director, Documentation and Computerization of the Cape Verdeans (DCCV) Project; Raymond Barrows and Wayne Ramos, cochairs of the New Bedford Smithsonian Committee; and John P. "Joli" Gonsalves, Director of the Cape Verdean Cultural Center.

The CV-A/CV page contains information on all aspects of Cape Verde and Cape Verdean-American history and culture. Information on Cape Verde includes geography, environment, ecosystem, history, culture, music, foods, literature, government, business and industry, traveller's information, references, media, etc. Information in the Cape Verdean-American section is centered on the Cape Verdean-American community of New Bedford and southeastern New England, and contains information on and (potential) links to other Cape Verdean-American communities and organizations.

As the page(s) develop, the following can be expected to be added:

- Information on the Cape Verde Internet Connectivity Project. - Photo Gallerys - CV and CV-A. - audio samples of Cape Verdean music. - audio of Crioulo words and expressions. - the Schooner Ernestina - current news from Cape Verde - phone/fax/email info on offices and organizations

Special thanks to NUWC for its support of and committment to the application of technolgy and resources for the benefit of humankind. Also to my NUWC colleague, Christopher DeAngelis, for major technical contributions and guidance; to Greg Stone, Director of Publications and Media Productions at the University of Massachusetts/Dartmouth, for his continuing support, assistance and counsel; and to the Prof. Richard Upchurch and all those at UMass/D who provide the first-rate computer facilities that host this home page. And especially to the spirit, determination and beauty of Cape Verde and her people, and to the Cape Verdean-American community, which have been the inspiration for this work.

Comments, corrections, and suggestions are welcomed and encouraged.
