Dear Jorge,

I am glad that you are still planning a program about our projects in Brasilia to be broadcasted by the Communitary Television. But I am sad because you will not come here to produce it with us...

Now we need know more about your plans. But first let me tell you more about ours. I think we should focus on the work done by a binational (Brazil><USA) organization (Partners of the Americas), involving the collaborative action of people from both countries, working in an integrated way... I think this will be sufficiently appealing for your sponsors and audience.

Then, we should focus on three different programs:

a) how we are trying to bring new solutions for the "youth issues": (cultural decaying, violence and gangs, street children, teen pregnancy, drug abuse, transmitted diseases, unemployment, lack of perspectives, low sense of citizenship etc.)

A.1 - The vegetable gardens we support in some poor communities, in some schools and in some institutions which give shelter to the street children; We support them with our rototiller, organizing their production, helping them to sell their products, transferring organic fertilizing technologies and control systems, etc. PS. The government doesn't have such a kind of support service. Just we do it. In Brazil, poor people and young people consider agriculture a humiliating service, and they usually hate eating vegetables... And they are very poor and weak and sick. So this project is really a very important and pioneer one, as it shows to the population and to the government (and to the other NGOs) what shall be done.

a.2 - The TOTAL Development Group, a cultural-environmental program (more or less 4-H style) being developed with the Secretary of Education of the Government of Brasilia. Our headquarters is at the School of Nature, a beautiful installation inside the Central Park of Brasilia, which will reach 8,000 students in the first year (this semester is the pilot phase), and many teachers and schools, principals, promoting a new awareness toward nature, culture and citizenship. The idea of creating a "movement" to organize, at their schools, the most interested youngsters, was ours and accepted by the School of Nature board. You may read more about it at our Web site. Click the Latest Updates option.

b) how we are supporting a microcredit project (community bank, Grameen Bank "replication") in Santa Maria, complementing what the Government cannot give or doesn't perceive how important would be to provide... So we are helping with our researches on the Internet (and at live in the USA) and lately organizing a computer aided account system, improving the control of loans, evaluations etc. Such a system could be replicated by other community associations that also want to set up their microcredit programs.

c) how we are using Internet networking capacities to gather support to our projects and broadcast our concerns and objectives, and also to broadcast toward the North a more comprehensive vision of ours (and of theirs). And how we are organizing an information site directed to the poor community leaders who soon will be able to access the Internet. _____________________________________________________

I like the idea of dividing the material to be used in more than one program. Maybe we could use the sequences in three or four programs.

In order to let me plan better, could you tell me, please: How long is your program? How many times is it broadcasted (weekly, monthly, daily?). In which states is it broadcasted? Is it local, state wide or nation wide? Where do you live? Could you send me a tape showing me your typical program? Do you or your program or the Communitary Television have a web site?
