9:45 AM - 4:30 PM Parallel 1 - Ethnic Conflict: The people in-between
(with lunch break) Focus: Sri Lanka
a) Principal aspects of displacement.
b) Effect on health, education and other social aspects.
c) National sovereignty and humanitarian intervention.
d) Relief and reconstruction needs and efforts.
Parallel 2 - Poverty Alleviation
Focus: India and Bangladesh
a) Literacy and Education.
b) Vocational Training and Cooperatives.
c) Economic Development - Micro enterprises and credit.
d) Role of media and non resident Asians.
Parallel 3 - Gender and Policies
Focus: India, Bangladesh and Pakistan
a) Women and Children's welfare.
b) Dowry and female infanticide.
c) Women's self employment.
d) Illiteracy.
e) Health care and Family planning.
Each parallel session will have moderated discussions between panelists
and the audience. Panelists will present summary of discussions.
The conference is co-sponsored by Howard University and various cultural
organizations in USA.
Registration: $50 (Includes lunch and dinner on both days)
For students registration fee is waived, and tickets for lunch and
dinner can be purchased.
Deadline for registration: June 25, 1996.

Around 250 academics, policy specialists, community leaders,
grassroots workers and students are expected to participate.
Further details of the program and conference materials will be
sent to the registered participants by 30th June, 1996.
Note added: No AID funds are being used for the conference. The
registration fees and other organizers & sponsors are funding it.
