PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This is a four-year project to provide technical and training assistance to Macedonia's Private Farmers Support Project. The project has six focus areas: agricultural support and extension services, agricultural research, private veterinary services, public animal health services, agricultural marketing, and rural financial intermediation.

Short-term technical assistance will be provided to help achieve the following objectives:

1. Develop participatory and accountable extension services through cost-sharing with farmer organizations and reorienta- tion of government extensions. 2. Support applied agricultural research through competitively- awarded contract research. 3. Support the privatization of veterinary services. 4. Develop the public epidemiological and border quarantine services. 5. Create a market news and information service. 6. Plan and design a private, horticultural wholesale market in Skopje. 7. Increase farmers' access to credit through the formal finan- cial sector, and establish an apex organization for rural, member-owned savings and credit associations (SCAs).

LENGTH OF PROJECT: 4 years total, though the longest expat. specialist assignment is 8 months PROPOSAL DUE DATE: July 15, 1996 ESTIMATED STARTUP: October, 1996
