16th International Congress of Nutrition to be Held in Montreal
July 27-August 1, 1997

The International Union of Nutritional Sciences will host the 16th International Congress of Nutrition in Montreal, Canada July 27 to August 1, 1997. "From Nutrition Science to Nutrition Practice for Better Global Health" will be the theme of the event, which attracts several thousand nutrition scientists, practitioners, and educators from around the world every four years.

The goal of the program is to explore the cutting edge of research in nutrition sciences and the relevance of this information in setting nutrition policy, providing the consumer with quality food products, and making recommendations for nutrition practices that will optimize health through the prevention and treatment of disease. Major themes will include new methodologies in nutrition sciences from genetic engineering to application of stable isotopic tracer techniques. Topics related to basic nutritional physiology and biochemistry will be explored in relation to the needs of specific groups such as infants, women, elite athletes, the aged, indigenous peoples and health issues in emerging nations. Current dietary prevention/treatment strategies in cancer, AIDS, severe malnutrition, and atherosclerosis will be explored.

OMNI will be sponsoring a number of speakers and participants from developing countries to attend the Congress. USAID plans to organize a symposium within the Congress on "Evaluating Nutrition Programs" as well as a workshop on *Potential of Food Fortification to Overcome Micronutrient Deficiencies.* This workshop will review food fortification experiences in planning, implementing, and evaluating national programs for fortification of food staples in developing countries and will highlight practical lessons for developing single and multiple micronutrient programs in other countries.

The 16th International Congress is being sponsored by the National Research Council of Canada, the Canadian Society for Nutritional Sciences, the Canadian Dietetic Association, Agricultural Institute of Canada and the Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology. ***************************************************************************** OPPORTUNITIES FOR MICRONUTRIENT INTERVENTIONS (OMNI) is funded by the Office of Health and Nutrition of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in Washington, D.C. and managed by John Snow, Inc. OMNI's mission is accomplished by developing integrated, comprehensive programs and strategies to reduce and eliminate major micronutrient deficiencies throughout the developing world. Participating countries are based on their micronutrient malnutrition problems, commitment by local officials (public and private) to micronutrient activities, and their capacity to achieve and sustain a demonstrable impact. ************************************************************************************** OMNI is located at 1616 North Fort Myer Dr, Suite 1100, Arlington, Virginia 22209 USA - Tel: 703 528-7474 - Fax: 703 528-7480 E-mail: mailto:omni@jsi.com WWW:http://www.jsi.com/intl/omni/home***********************************************************************************
