INTERNATIONAL COURSES ON FOOD PROCESSING
**************************************************************************************
The International Agricultural Centre has announced two courses on
food processing to be held in Wageningen, the Netherlands. Food
processing is an important means to decrease food losses and improve
food availability, quality, and variety throughout the year. Thus it
contributes to a
region's food security.

The 14-week course on Quality Assurance and Marketing starts 11 August. It is designed to help participants identify and solve problems in food processing by focusing on the selection of technology, quality assurance, and marketing. It is intended for professionals who provide business advisory, training and technical support services to food processing enterprises or groups. The course is also intended to benefit owners of small and medium-scale food processing enterprises.

The 6-week course on Food Fortification Management starts 6 October. Food fortification is the most sustainable long-term strategy to control iodine deficiency disorders. It is also an important short- and medium term strategy to combat vitamin A deficiency and iron deficiency anemia. The course is designed to provide participants with information on food fortification technology and processes, appropriate food vehicles that may be fortified, and fortificants that convey micronutrients. The course's strategic focus is to assist governments, private enterprises, and consumers in developing the capacity to eliminate micronutrient malnutrition. The course is intended for government employees with an advisory role to the food processing industry, industry employees in charge of food fortification processing, and individuals who can play a technical or operational role in food fortification in their respective countries.

OMNI partner, Program Against Micronutrient Malnutrition (PAMM) has cooperated with the Internatonal Agricultural Center in training and workshop micronutrient activities.

***************************************************************************** OPPORTUNITIES FOR MICRONUTRIENT INTERVENTIONS (OMNI) is funded by the Office of Health and Nutrition of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in Washington, D.C. and managed by John Snow, Inc. OMNI's mission is accomplished by developing integrated, comprehensive programs and strategies to reduce and eliminate major micronutrient deficiencies throughout the developing world. Participating countries are based on their micronutrient malnutrition problems, commitment by local officials (public and private) to micronutrient activities, and their capacity to achieve and sustain a demonstrable impact. *************************************************************************************** OMNI is located at 1616 North Fort Myer Dr, Suite 1100, Arlington, Virginia 22209 USA - Tel: 703 528-7474 - Fax: 703 528-7480 E-mail: mailto:omni@jsi.com WWW: http://www.jsi.com/intl/omni/home
