INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON POPULATION, HEALTH AND THE ENVIRONMENT

CHIANG MAI UNIVERSITY, THAILAND, 7-11 January 1997

The Department of Geography, Chiang Mai University, is organizing a symposium on POPULATION, HEALTH AND THE ENVIRONMENT in Chiang Mai, Thailand, 7-11 January 1997. The symposium is being held on behalf of the IGU Commission on Population and the Environment with the participation of the Commission on Health.

The symposium will include the following topics:

The Geographical Inequalities of Health Definitions, concepts, methodological problems; indicators of health within populations; geographical pattern of the epidemiological transition.

Health and Gender Gender inequalities and their impact on health within populations.

Health and the Environment The impact of environmental conditions on health; the influence of environmental degradation.

Population, Development and Health Consequences of the development process on health.

Abstracts Abstracts should be received no later than 1 November 1996 and should be accompanied (or preceded) by the author's completed registration form.

Papers Papers should not exceed 5000 words and must be received no later than 30 November 1996.

All papers will be printed in the conference proceedings as received, so a high-quality camera-ready copy with 2.54 cm (1 ") margins is required, single spacing and 12 point type (Times Roman preferred). All pages should be numbered in pencil in the top left-hand corner.

Study Tour/Excursion There will be two tours during the symposium: a half day historical/ sociological study tour of the city of Chiang Mai; and a one-day excursion.

Registration Registration for the symposium is US$ 200.00. This includes the reception, lunches, morning and afternoon teas during the conference, conference dinner, study tour, excursion, and a copy of the conference proceedings.

An accompanying partner fee of US$ 90.00 provides access to the reception, conference dinner, study tour and excursion.

The registration and accompanying partner fees are non-refundable. The completed registration form and registration fee should be received no later than 1 November 1996. Confirmation will be received in writing.

Official Language All discussion of the conference will be conducted in English and French.

Official letter of invitation Those who require an official letter of invitation to attend the conference should write to the conference organiser specifying details. This is to assist participants who need to obtain a visa or permission to attend and is not an official invitation.

Visas It is recommended you contact the nearest Thai Embassy or Consulate to find out about visa requirements for travel to Thailand.

Method of Payment Payment for both registration and accommodation may be made by bank draft, bank transfer or credit card.

Accommodation The symposium formally commences with a reception on the evening of 7 January 1997 and ends on the afternoon of 11 January 1997.

Accommodation for participants will be available at UNISERV (the university guest house), and the Amari Rincome Hotel (the symposium venue). Both accommodation types are conveniently located close to banks, a post office, shops and restaurants.

Accommodation must be paid in full when making a reservation.

UNISERV Moderately priced accommodation located on Chiang Mai University campus. All rooms have private bathrooms. Restaurant facilities are available. Room rates are as follows (breakfast is not included in prices quoted):

Amari Rincome Hotel Comfortable accommodation with pool and restaurant facilities. The hotel is also the venue for the symposium. Room rates are as follows (prices include American breakfast):
