- New database: Washington University users have access to a new database, due to a Becker Medical Library subscription: Essential Science Indicators. It provides Internet access to a unique and comprehensive compilation of essential science performance statistics and science trends data derived from ISI's databases. More info. 4/8/2004
- New database: The Libraries have subscribed to China Academic Journals (Literature/History/Philosophy series), a full text periodical database covering more than 300 major periodicals currently published in China, including articles from 1994 to date. More info. 3/31/2004

- Another upcoming event: The Digital Cathedral: New Media and the Spaces of Medieval Architecture, a lecture by Stephen Murray, 6 p.m. Tuesday, November 18, Auditorium, Washington University Gallery of Art, Steinberg Hall. Stephen Murray teaches in Columbia University's Department of Art History
and Archaeology and directs the Visual Media Center. He has written extensively on the cathedrals of Amiens, Beauvais, and Troyes. Murray will speak about using 3-D simulation, digital imaging, and video in his cathedral studies. Sponsored by the Washington University Libraries and the Sam Fox Arts Center. 10/28/2003
- Washington University Libraries invite you to attend Spoils of War: Building Libraries in the 17th Century, a talk by Jill Bepler, Herzog August Library (Germany), 7:30 p.m. Tuesday,
October 28, Brookings Hall, Room 300. Jill Bepler, Ph.D., heads the Fellowship Program at Germany's Herzog August Library, a research center for medieval and early modern studies in cultural history. She will discuss how war affected the movement of books throughout Europe in the 17th century when important collections were being destroyed just as the foundations were being laid for some of the most important libraries in German. The threat that wars pose to cultural heritage remains a concern today. 10/7/2003
- Modern Literature Reading Series: John Morris: Selections, 4 p.m. Wednesday, October 22, in Special Collections, Olin Library, Level 1. Faculty and graduate students will read from their work and that of poet John Morris (1931-1997). Morris taught in the English Department from 1967 to 1996. Though Morris never sought the limelight, many of his peers consider him to be one of the leading poets of the last half-century. 10/1/2003

Olin Library, Level 1. The June 2003 publication of the Selected Poems of Howard Nemerov by Swallow Press occasions this reading of Nemerov's works. Nick Admussen and Carl Phillips will be reading poems by Nemerov and some of their own work. Free and open to the public. Reception will follow. - Washington University Libraries invite you to Book Arts, a slide presentation by Carol Barton at 4 p.m. Monday, September 15, 2003 in the Arc Presentation Room on Level A of Olin Library. Reception follows in Special Collections. Carol Barton is an award-winning book artist and curator whose work is held in many collections, including the Library of Congress, the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian, and Washington University Libraries. Barton teaches at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and is at work on a how-to book on paper engineering. - Please join us for a lecture: Five Centuries of Judeo-Spanish. Gad Nassi will speak on En Tierras Ajenas Yo Me Vo Murir, a contemporary book in Judeo-Spanish. Gad Nassi is editor of a new anthology of contemporary short stories, legends, and memoirs written in Judeo-Spanish, an endangered language passed down by Sephardic Jews who were expelled from Spain in 1492; today the language is spoken by fewer than 200,000 people worldwide. To raise awareness of Judeo-Spanish writing and to encourage more work in this area, Dr. Nassi collected written works and illustrations from 36 contributors around the world. Roz Kohen Drohobyczer of Olin Library’s Reference Department is one of five contributors from the United States. Dr. Nassi, a native of Istanbul, currently practices psychiatry in Israel.
