Welcome to a brief presentation of American history as seen through publications from the Government Printing Office! In assembling the physical display (in the Library's Grand Staircase Foyer and Gingko Room), we discovered we couldn't do full justice to either the history of our country or to the government publications about those events.
Here, we've created segments by decade to give you a taste of the important events of the time and some of the documents which were important in recording and describing that history. Some of the publications were chosen because they highlighted, explained, or were key to events in that decade. We chose others because they discuss interesting sidelights of the time.
Looking to the left side of your screen, find a decade that interests you. The link will take you to a timeline for the decade and a brief overview of its place in American history. We don't expect you to explore this site all at once. Come back often!

and when they were created.
