The Modern Literature Reading Series continues a fourth year with an event as part of the Tennessee Wililams Symposium. Welcoming Remarks by Gerald Early, Merle Kling Professor of Modern Letters and Director of the Center for the Humanities at Washington University. Playwright Tenneessee Williams spent one fateful year (1936-1937) as a student at Washington University, during which he suffered his first great professional disappointment: losing a playwriting competition to classmates Shephard Mead (How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying) and A. E. Hotchner (Papa Hemingway). Professor Gerald Early will discuss Williams' life and work in the context of that year at WU. Special Collections will display a manuscript of Williams' unsuccessful play, Me Vashya, and photographs from Williams' time in St. Louis. Organized in conjunction with the Performing Arts Department's International Symposium on Tennessee Williams. |
