The William Gass Papers Modern Literature Collection |
In recognition of William Gass's 80th birthday in July, 2004, Washington University Libraries invite you to celebrate his life and work by joining us for the following two events: A Celebration of William Gass, 7:30 p.m., Whispers Cafe, John M. Olin Library, Level 1. This event will feature readings by novelist Ethan Bumas, literary critic Marc Chenetier, poet Heather McHugh, and novelist Joanna Scott; comments by Gass's Washington University colleagues, Chancellor Emeritus William Danforth, Philosophy Professor Emeritus Richard "Red" Watson; and Dean of University Libraries Shirley Baker; and the presentation of a volume of essays by various distinguished writers, in honor of Gass's 80th birthday. A Reception and Viewing of a Collaborative Gass/Eastman Exhibition, immediately following the program, Gingko Reading Room, Olin Library, Level 1. The event features the work of frequent collaborators William Gass and photographer Michael Eastman. On display beginning in mid-September, this reception comes shortly before the exhibition's October 11th closing. Books by Gass and Eastman will be on sale during the exhibition. William Gass, is a writer of short stories, novels, and literary criticism whose works and prestigious awards and grants are too numerous to list here. He is the David May Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Humanities at Washington Univeristy in St. Louis, where he taught from 1969 to 1999 and founded the International Writers Center in 1990, directing it until his retirement in 2000. Michael Eastman, is an accomplished photographer whose work has appeared on Time magazine's cover and in the pages of Life and the New York Times. Many museums, foundations, and individuals have his work in their collections. Michael Eastman is a neighbor and friend of Bill Gass. |
