Our Favorite Books, Spring 2006The End of the Convivencia in Spain: Christians, Moors, and JewsA talk by Joseph Schraibman, Professor of Romance Languages & Literatures, Washington University Wednesday, March 29, 2006 4-5 p.m. Ginkgo Reading Room, on level 1 of Washington University’s John M. Olin Library In 1599, Augustin Salucio published a discourse protesting Spain’s policies of racial discrimination, contrasting them to an earlier time of “convivencia” when Christians, Moors, and Jews co-existed peacefully in Spain. Professor Schraibman will discuss the 1637 written response of Geronimo de la Cruz and explore how Spain’s 400-year-old national debate continues to influence that country’s cultural inheritance today. The Favorite Book series features noted scholars speaking about treasures from Special Collections. The series explores various disciplines associated with the history of the book. These may include authorship and editing; design and printing; social, cultural, and economic issues related to book production; reader response and the literary canon; censorship and the politics of print; and much more.
