The End of the Convivencia in Spain: Christians, Moors, and Jews

A talk by Joseph Schraibman, Professor of Romance Languages & Literatures, Washington University

Wednesday, March 29, 2006
4-5 p.m.
Ginkgo Reading Room, on level 1 of Washington University’s John M. Olin Library

In 1599, Augustin Salucio published a discourse protesting Spain’s policies of racial discrimination, contrasting them to an earlier time of “convivencia” when Christians, Moors, and Jews co-existed peacefully in Spain. Professor Schraibman will discuss the 1637 written response of Geronimo de la Cruz and explore how Spain’s 400-year-old national debate continues to influence that country’s cultural inheritance today.
