Known primarily as a naturalist, Richard Jefferies wrote several sketches of the English countryside and first achieved recognition with his collection, The Gamekeeper at Home (1878). He was also a novelist, whose works include Wood Magic (1881) and Bevis (1882). For more information on the life of Jefferies, see his autobiography, Story of My Heart (1883).
The Jefferies Collection does not contain any primary material relating to the writer. Included is a printed pamphlet by Frances Anne Collins entitled “Stonehenge” (1916). The rest of the materials are from 1947-1948 and concern of centenary celebration of Jefferies. Included are letters between Eric Harris and Samuel Looker, organizers of the event, as well as clippings pertaining to the Jefferies centenary.
