Printed text of the libretto of the Rape of Lucretia, music by Benjamin Britten, published by Boosey and Hawkes Ltd., London, et. al. 1946: 1 item (56 pp.) 5×8": Green covers

Insertion between front cover and title page, in the hand of Ronald Duncan, "The Rape of Lucretia original & first text printed for the first production at Glyndbourne[sic]. On this text, Britten & I made cuts & revision notes for the revised edition of the opera which was produced the subsequent year at Glyndbourne[sic], Covent Garden & Salzburg." Ms. corrections and additions in red and black ink, and pencil, in Ronald Duncan's hand, on pp. 12-17, Act I scene 1; pp. 24 and 28, scene 2; pp. 30-32, Act II scene 1; p. 41, Interlude; pp. 42, 44-45, 48-52, 56, Act II scene2. Inserts include ms. laid between pp. 12 and 13; ts. with ms. revisions between 14 and 15; ts. with ms. revisions between 16 and 17; ts. with ms. revisions between pp. 30 and 31; ts. with ms. addition between pp. 40 and 41; 3 ts., one with ms. revisions between 48 and 49. On p. 51 "see insert B," insert is missing. Clippings also laid in.
The 1948 Bodley Head, London edition, keeps most of the revisions found in the 1946 edition. Exceptions occur, for example where the later version uses the printed text rather than the ms. additions, revisions, or deletions [compare pp. 12, 48, 51,: 1946 with pp. 14, 48, 51: 1948] where the 1948 version has additions and changes not in the printed, ts. or ms. versions [compare inserts between 16-17, c between 48-49 and p. 49: 1946 and pp. 18, 19, 31, and 49: 1948] where the 1948 version prefers the ts. version over the ms. revisions [compare ts. between 14-15: 1946 and p. 17: 1948]
