This small collection relating to the prominent British author and naturalist, Jocelyn Brooke, consists of Brooke's manuscripts for an unpublished book, two essays, and a set of page proofs for Marcel Proust: A Biography, Vol. 2, by George D. Painter, which Brooke annotated. The typescript carbon manuscript for the as-yet-unpublished book is entitled Furious and Deadly, and Experiment in Exorcism, and is an autobiographical study of the occult. In it, Brooke explores the varieties of religious experience, personal childhood fears, terror, and unexplained phenomena. The manuscript bears numerous literary and scientific references and illusions, including an examination of Christian Science and its founder Mary Baker Eddy.
