<head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>William G.B. Carson, a longtime professor of English at Washington
University, is best known for his scholarly work in the history of the
American theatre and for the active role he played in staging theatrical
productions at Washington University and within the St. Louis community
      at large. Carson's books include <title altrender="italic">Theatre
on the Frontier</title>, (1932) and a biography of the great American
      actress Josephine Hull.</p>
</bioghist>
<scopecontent>
<head>Scope and Contents Note</head>
<p>The William G. B. Carson Papers consists of four accruals.</p>
<p>Accrual 1 is Accession 8310, which includes materials relating to
United States theatre history; materials relating to Carson's
teaching at Washington University in St. Louis; theatre playbills,
programs, magazines, and newspaper articles; correspondence and
autograph collection of famous actors, actresses, and writers. This
      includes ca. 211 items from 1783-1955 in 4 boxes.</p>
<p>Accrual 2 is Accession 15020, which relates primarliy to preparation
      of <emph render="italic">Dear Josephine</emph>, Professor Carson's
biography on Josephine Sherwood Hull. It also includes teaching
notebooks prepared for theatre and drama courses at Washington
University and diaries Professor Carson kept of theatre and music
performances he attended from 1913 to 1966, primarliy in St. Louis. This
      includes ca. 777 items from 1897 to 1963 in 19 boxes.</p>
<p>Accrual 3 is Accession 16520 and 17530, which includes scripts of
plays by Washington University students, newsclipping about Professor
Carson's retirement, theatre programs, and printed material. This
      includes ca. 152 items ranging from 1928 to 1961 in 8 boxes.</p>
<p>Accrual 4 is Accession 16560 and 22907, which includes materials that
fall under two main categories: early New Mexico history and materials
relating to Carson's theatrical activities. Carson's research
into New Mexico history was prompted by the fact that his
great-great-grandfather, William Carr Lane, besides being one of the
first St. Louis mayors, was also first governor of New Mexico,
1852-1853. The diary kept by Lane during his governorship was edited by
Carson, requiring research into geography and exploration, Indian
relations, and political figures of the period. The Theatrical
Activities include personal material, material from his teaching at
Washington University, material from Washington University's Thyrsus
organization, material from his time as a playwright and director,
material from Carson as an author, material from St. Louis' Little
Theatre and The Players, and his research on theatre and musical
performances. This also includes printed material and maps. This
      includes ca. 579 items ranging from 1821 to 1965 in 20 boxes.</p>

<p>Accrual 1: Processed by Washington University Department Special
Collections Staff <date>October, 1974, </date>and revised by Sonya
        McDonald, <date>March 2003. </date>EAD encoded finding-aid completed
by Sonya McDonald, <date> November 2003</date>. Accrual 2, Accrual 3,
and Accrual 4: Processed by Sonya McDonald, <date> January 2003</date>.

<note>
<p>Accruals 1 - 4: Preservation Photocopies were made of some
material; the copies are labeled "Preservation Photocopies,
prepared [date]" Information on acidic clippings have been
preserved and the clipping has been removed from the collection.</p>
<p>Accruals 1 - 4: Throughout the collection, some material is in
paper folders. Originally this material was grouped together by
paperclip or staple. These metal fasteners have been removed and the
buffered paper folders are used to keep the information together.</p>
<p>Accrual 3: The scripts "Me, Vashya" by Tennessee (Thomas
Lanier) Williams as of March 18, 2003: The 19pp Ts[c] of the script
in the Washington University exam folder is from Accession 1753.
There is a discrepancy with Accession 1652: the accession card
states that there are three drafts of Tennessee Williams script for
"Me, Vashya," but there is only the 22pp Ts[c] and the 1p Ts
note that are probably part of Accession 1652. These three documents
were moved back to the William G. B. Carson Theatre Collection,
Accession 1652 and Accession1753 from the Miscellany collection.</p>

has some revisions in ink, and includes a list of props and

of determining whether these auto revisions are in
Williams' hand or not. This copy appears to be an earlier
version of a bound typescript carbon draft (below). This is
                from Accession 1753.</p>
<p>Tennessee Williams was a student in W. G. B. Carson's 1936-1937 English XVI class on playwriting. Each year three plays were selected by a jury to be produced the following year by Thyrsus, the dramatic club. Williams was upset when his play was not one of the three chosen for production, althought the play was later used as a St. Louis radio production.</p>
