Born in Austin, Minnesota, and a graduate of Dartmouth (1926) and Cambridge (1929), Richard Eberhart’s poetry is noted for its simplicity and directness. Perhaps his most frequent theme is that of the loss of innocence and spontaneity. Among his volumes of poetry are A Bravery of Earth (1930), Undercliff (1953), Shifts of Being (1968), Collected Poems, 1930-1976 (1976), and New and Selected Poems: 1930-1990 (1990). His Collected Verse Plays was published in 1962. See study by Ralph J. Mills, Jr. (1966).
One letter (August 19, 1942) is to Israel Smith and concerns the publication of his book Song and Idea. The other letter (March 5, 1968) expresses his opposition to the Vietnam War and offers to auction some rare editions of his poems to raise money for the Vietnam Peace Parade Committee.
