Edward Dahlberg, an author long recognized for his idiosyncratic style and highly personal view of man and the state, remains one of the more important, albeit neglected, American authors of the 20th century. He wrote fiction, poetry, and criticism and is sometimes compared to Thoreau as a writer who stood apart from society and asked the questions no one else dared ask. Despite a nearly 20 year hiatus in the 1940's and the 1950's, Dahlberg was extremely prolific, producing over 20 books of poetry, criticism, fiction, and autobiography.

Washington University's Edward Dahlberg Papers include letters by Dahlberg from the 1960's as well as letters written to him by other writers in the 1970's. The Papers also contain an uncorrected galley proof of Dahlberg's collection of aphorisms, Reasons of the Heart (1965).
