Guy Chapman was an editor, historian, and author who began his career in editing in 1920, and worked for several publishing firms, including his own, for 20 years. He became interested in historical documents and biography while still fairly young and produced a number of important books about modern European history, including his widely-respected The Dreyfus Case: A Reassessment (1955). Chapman served in both World Wars and following World War II, he began a career as professor of history at the University of Leeds in England. His autobiography, A Kind of Survivor: The Autobiography of Guy Chapman, was published posthumously in 1975.
The Chapman Papers consist principally of letters written to Chapman by C.C. Scott-Moncrieff, an author whose books Chapman edited in the 1920's. Of special interest in this collection are twelve letters written by the Irish author, George Moore, from 1924-1925, and the galley proofs and typescript revision of Moore's preface to Scott-Moncrieff's book.
