William G.B. Carson, a longtime professor of English at Washington University, is best known for his scholarly work in the history of the American theatre and for the active role he played in staging theatrical productions at Washington University and within the St. Louis community at large. Carson's books include Theatre on the Frontier (1932), and a biography of the great American actress Josephine Hull.

The Carson Papers consist primarily of materials relating to theatre history. The Papers also include an extensive autograph collection which contains letters of Sarah Bernhardt, Edwin Booth, Edmund Kean, Henry W. Longfellow, and William Wordsworth, among others. Carson's own correspondence includes letters from actresses Katharine Cornell, Julie Harris, Cornelia Otis Skinner and Alfred Lunt, as well as the correspondence with the two literary figures listed below.
