Access: Open

Roy Campbell was born in Natal but came to England in 1918. In 1924, The Flaming Terrapin, an allegorical narrative of the Flood was published with considerable success. He returned to South Africa to found a satirical literary magazine which attacked the early English Georgian poets, Spanish Communists, and the Bloomsbury group.  His first autobiography, Broken Record, contained opinions that have been seen as fascist in their glorification of military strength. He became a Roman Catholic in 1935 and fought for Franco in Spain, as well as in the British Army in Africa during World War II. Besides his poetry and satire, he spent considerable time translating, mainly from French and Spanish. He was killed in a car crash in Portugal.

The undated post card contains a photograph of Campbell on the back and is addressed to “My dear Marshall.”
