John Burroughs was born on the family farm in Roxbury, New York on April 3, 1837 and died on a train while returning from California on March 29, 1921.  He was an immensely popular nature writer, and his oeuvre eventually filled 23 volumes of essays. Burroughs is also considered the first biographer of Walt Whitman (Notes on Walt Whitman as Poet and Person - 1967). He was buried on the same farm where he was born upon his eighty-fourth birthday, April 3, 1921.  He is still remembered for his strong attraction to nature and as an early champion of ecology.

The Burroughs ms. is an autographed poem “Early Spring Gladness,” signed and dated April 17, 1901.  5 leaves, 8” x 5”, bound in blue morocco (5 pp.).
