Finding-Aid for the Burr-Purkitt Papers [00022]

Collection Description

Access: Open

Henry Purkitt, ca. 1775-1846, was a participant in the Boston Tea Party and served under Washington in the Revolution.  He later lived in Boston.  His son, Caleb, graduated in 1846 from Missouri Medical College and was associated with Washington University.  Though the connection is unclear, his family was related to the family of Aaron Burr, enigmatic figure from American history books.

The Burr-Purkitt Family Papers consists of correspondence among members of the Burr and Purkitt families beginning in 1784, and discuss a range of issues, including social and family troubles, the Aaron Burr trial, and financial problems.  There are also family portaraits and clippings from several newspapers.  In the miscellany is a land grant signed by James Monroe.
