Anthony Burgess, generally regarded as one of the foremost authors of twentieth-century fiction, began his writing career in Melaya in the 1950's when he wrote Time for a Tiger (1956), the first of a trilogy of novels. He also produced more than 28 novels and ten books of non-fiction, as well as several plays, filmstrips, and translations.
The Burgess Papers consist primarily of manuscripts toward four of his books. Washington University holds typescripts, all signed by Burgess with corrections and revisions on his hand, of the novels Devil of a State (1961), The Wanting Seed (1962), and Nothing like the Sun (1964). The collection also includes a signed and corrected typescript, as well as a corrected galley proof, of the book of criticism, Language Made Plain (1964). Washington University's Anthony Burgess collection is completed by Burgess's typescript review of John Barth's Giles Goat-Boy and a musical composition by Burgess scored for piano and orchestra.
