A naturalist and famed explorer, Giacomo Costantino Beltrami is perhaps most famous for locating a route to the source of the Mississippi River which he discovered while exploring the territory that later became Minnesota in 1823. He recounted this expedition in his book, La decouverte des sources du Mississippi.
In a letter dated February 18, 1830, Beltrami thanks the
members of the New York athenaeum for the honor of being admitted
to the academy and presents in return a section of his book Le
Mexique; he hopes he is worthy of the honor given by the
body.
