Harold C. Ackert, a prominent University City, Missouri, attorney and public official, graduated from the Washington University School of Law in 1927. Ackert maintained a lifelong interest in the theatre and assembled a remarkable theatre library, the bulk of which he donated to Washington University in 1979. His widow, Mrs. Virginia Ackert, also donated additional material.
The Ackert collection has as its centerpiece an extensive group of books, manuscripts, letters, and memorabilia relating to the great Irish playwright, George Bernard Shaw. The collection includes first and variant editions, photographs and drawings, Shaw's correspondence with the British author John Drinkwater, a holograph draft of a speech, additional correspondence, miscellaneous material, and ephemera.
