Scope Note:
In late 1530 when the city of Florence submitted to Pope
Clement's forces, Michelangelo believed himself to be in danger
with the other Florentines who were being exiled or executed, and
took refuge in the campanile di San Niccolo, near the Arno River.
Though he remained in hiding for several months, he need not have
feared, being favored by both sides: the Medici and the people.
The piece shown here is presumed to be a journal passage written
during this period. The entry cited several days between November
2 and November 20, 1530 and itemizes various business
transactions.
