Eugene Field, a native of St. Louis, attended Lombard College (since merged with Knox College) and moved to Chicago, where he became a columnist. His column, "Sharps and Flats," ran from 1883 to 1885. He wrote sentimental and children’s poetry, including the well-known "Little Boy Blue" and "Dutch Lullaby."

The papers include a Ms. list of poems by Field in an unkown hand, with pencil revisions. Also there is a ts. list of "Eugene Field Material," signed by L. Mangers, and inscribed "to be used by Lloyd Mangers, 12-11-62."
These letters are signed to Mr. Gay, and thank him and his wife for a pleasant visit and mention Field’s failing health.
