KASKASKIA: Village, Randolph Co., SW Illinois, at junction of the Kaskaskia river with the Mississippi; pop. 97; site of oldest town in the West, founded 1703 as an Indian village, passed to the British 1765, made capital of territory of Illinois 1809, capital of state of Illinois 1818-20; by 1910 town completely destroyed as result of flood 1844 and further encroachments of the Mississippi 1881 and later.
