Mrs. I. A. Stevens was the daughter of collector and bibliophile William Keeney Bixby.

Material in this collection was presented to William Keeney Bixby's daughter, Mrs. I. A. Stevens. Though many of the letters and autographs in the collection were solicited or purchased by Bixby, later a Chairman of the American Car and Foundry Company, several have specifically to do with his interests. For example, Jefferson Davis’ letter to Bixby, regarded as a copperhead during the Civil War, was a response to a solicitation for employment in the South, to which Davis later responded by introducing young Bixby to the Governor of Texas who found him a job on the International Great Northern Railroad. Included in the collection are numerous literary manuscripts
