Biographical Note

Born in Chicago, Illinois. University of California-Los Angeles, B.A., 1932; University of California-Berkeley, M.A., 1934, Ph.D., 1938. Josephine Miles has been a member of the English faculty at Berkeley since 1940, becoming Professor in 1952. Honors: Phelan Award; Shelley Award, 1935; Guggenheim Fellowship; National Institute of Arts and Letters Award, 1956; Blumenthal Prize (Poetry), 1959; American Council of Learned Societies fellowship, 1965; Linguistic Society of America, U.S. Fellowship in the Arts, 1967.
