The Charles H. Craver Collection
Charles Henry Craver was born in Eldon, Missouri and attended the School of Fine Arts at Washington University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1933. After an early career as a freelance illustrator, he was employed for over 50 years as a staff artist for the Missouri Department of Health in Jefferson City. From the 1920s through the 1950s, Craver amassed a substantial group of clipped story and advertising illustrations from numerous periodicals by a wide range of the most prominent American illustrators. The resulting collection, comprised of hundreds of tearsheets by 61 artists and ranging in quantity from a handful to dozens of examples by each, provides an in-depth history of the Golden Age of American illustration art.
