- The Physics Library will be closed November 26-27, 2009 for the
Thanksgiving holiday.
- RefWorks
Now Offers Access to Alumni! - RefWorks-COS has announced their Alumni Program
which gives lifelong access to alumni as long as WU Libraries continue to subscribe to RefWorks.

alumni program.
- ITeach Newsletter -
Fall 2009 - ITeach 2010, a faculty-development symposium, will be held on January 14, 2010,
from 8:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Seigle Hall, on the Danforth Campus. The symposium includes a
plenary discussion and 16 concurrent sessions. It is a great opportunity to gather with colleagues
to discuss teaching and to learn about innovative and effective teaching strategies that have been
developed here at Washington University. ITeach is coordinated by the Teaching and Technology
Partnership (Arts & Sciences, The Teaching Center, and University Libraries). For more information
and to register, please go to http://iteach.wustl.edu.
- The
2009 Nobel Prize in Physics was announced on Tuesday, October 6. The Nobel Prize
in Physics has been awarded with one half to Charles K. Kao, Standard Telecommunication Laboratories,
Harlow, UK, and Chinese University of Hong Kong "for groundbreaking achievements concerning
the transmission of light in fibers for optical communication" and the other half jointly to
Willard S. Boyle and George E. Smith, Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, NJ, USA, "for the
invention of an imaging semiconductor circuit – the CCD sensor."
- A New Application lets Researchers Download
and Store AIP Journal Articles to their iPhone or iPod Touch - The American Institute
of Physics announced the launch of its new mobile e-Reader application, iResearch.
iResearch was developed to provide physicists, engineers, scientists, and students
with mobile access to valuable physics journal content. Users may access iResearch via the
Apple iTunes store to download the application for version 3.0 and higher.

Library Directors Protest Huge Jump in 'Scientific American' Price - A group of 50
library directors has sent a letter to the managing director of the Nature Publishing Group,
protesting a huge increase in the price of institutional subscriptions to Scientific American.
Scientific American is probably the nation's most venerable source of science news written
for a general audience. The Nature group, which took over the magazine this year, proposes to
charge $299 for a 2010 print subscription—up from $39.95—and as much as $1,500 for an annual
license for online access—up from $1,000—depending on how big the institution is. The libraries'
directors called the increase "unreasonable" and said that it "hinders our ability to meet the
information needs of our library users."
- Positional
effects on citation and readership in arXiv, Asif-ul Haque, Paul Ginsparg. Journal
of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, 60:11, pp. 2203 - 2218 -
an interesting article confirming a correlation between article position in initial arXiv
announcements and later citation impact, due primarily to intentional self-promotion by authors.
