Pfeiffer Physics Library News
November, 2007
** News **
- The Physics Library will be closed November 22-23, 2007 for the
Thanksgiving holiday.
- PhysMath Central announced
that PMC Physics A, the first
PhysMath Central journal, has published its first research articles. The articles
included a groundbreaking study that could change the way physicists understand
dark matter. In addition, PMC announced the launch of PMC
Physics B.
- Particle
physicists push for publishing changes - The high-energy physics community
wants all of its published research to be freely available to everybody. Jens Vigen
reports on how a radical new initiative hopes to achieve this.
- Scholarly Communication - Two new blogs you may be interested in:
- Bernard Becker Medical Library Scholarly Communications Update - This blog includes
information on scholarly communications issues such as author rights, copyright,
public access mandates, fair use, open access, economics of scholarly resources,
support for authors, publishing models, preservation, and digital repositories.
- The Center for Information Technology at Princeton is hosting a blog-based
Symposium on the Future of Scholarly Communication. The symposium is a strong
group of panelists conducting a discussion in blog (or serial essay) format.

- The 2007 Nobel Prize in Physics was announced on Tuesday, October 9. The Nobel
Prize in Physics has been won by Albert Fert, Unité Mixte de Physique CNRS/THALES,
Université Paris-Sud, Orsay, France, and Peter Grünberg, Forschungszentrum Jülich,
Germany, for the discovery of Giant Magnetoresistance. This year's physics prize
is awarded for the technology that is used to read data on hard disks. It is thanks
to this technology that it has been possible to miniaturize hard disks so radically
in recent years. Sensitive read-out heads are needed to be able to read data from
the compact hard disks used in laptops and some music players, for instance.
