  • Library Inventory - The annual inventory of Physics Library material was done in May. Twenty nine books have been identified as lost or missing. Books that are missing two years in a row, or paid for by the patron who lost it, are considered to be lost. Books which are now considered lost are listed below or can be found at: [http://catalog.wustl.edu/search/r?SEARCH=Physics+Library+Lost+Books]. Please check the list to see if there are any lost books which should be replaced and let me know.

    • Beginner's Russian reader, with conversational exercises
    • Deconvolution of images and spectra / edited by Peter A. Jansson
    • Electromagnetic symmetry / edited by Carl E. Baum, Haralambos N. Kritikos.
    • Frontiers in electromagnetics / edited by Douglas H. Werner, Raj Mittra.
    • Fundamentals of photonics / Bahaa E.A. Saleh, Malvin Carl Teich

In addition to the 13 lost books, there are 16 other books which are missing. That list can be found at: [http://catalog.wustl.edu/search/r?SEARCH=Physics+Library+Missing+Books].
Any help in recovering any of these titles will be greatly appreciated.

  • IngentaConnect Alerting Service will be discontinued August 31, 2009. Up to 5 tables of contents are free from this service but we have been paying for additional tables of contents and search alerts for WU campus users. A few alternatives are listed at Database, Journal, and Search Engine Alerts. If you wish, please contact me for help setting up alternative alerts.

  • Attention Fall Physics course instructors! If there are books or other materials which I need to order for reserve please notify me as soon as possible. Also if you have selected a new textbook or a new edition, please let me know. I do not receive the information which you send to the bookstore. Thank you!

**Recent Additions to the Library Web Pages**

[Suggestions are welcome!]

These additions are somewhere in the Physics and Astronomy Research Guide [http://libguides.wustl.edu/physics/] portion of the Washington University Library web pages.

  • WolframAlpha Web Site, a New Kind of Research Helper - What if you could ask your encyclopedia to not only spit out facts, but to perform an analysis with those facts or compute the answers to a math problem for you? A free Web site promises to do just that, potentially becoming a virtual research assistant for professors. The new site, called WolframAlpha, seems bound to be a useful -- and possibly controversial -- tool on college campuses. The service will present users with a simple search box, as Google does. But WolframAlpha won't just point to Web sites about what the user types; it will attempt to compute an answer based on its vast collection of facts and statistical-analysis software.
