Biographical Sketch


Richard I. Schwartz was born on March 11, 1951 and was raised in St. Louis, Missouri. He has degrees from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (BME 1973), and Washington University in St. Louis (MM Clarinet Performance1975) and (PhD Music Theory 1982). Professor Schwartz has been on the music faculty at Virginia State University, Petersburg, Virginia, since 1976, and he teaches a variety of music theory classes, music composition, and woodwinds. His compositions and arrangements are for many types of ensembles including band, woodwinds, brasswinds, voice, and keyboard. He has published many articles, reviews, music, and the highly acclaimed books: The Cornet Compendium (2001), Supplement to the Cornet Compendium (2002), Bands at the St. Louis World's Fair of 1904 (2003), and Supplement to Bands at the St. Louis World's Fair (2005) the last two co-authored with his wife, Iris. He has performed clarinet, saxophone, and cornet in many organizations, including the St. Louis Symphony, Richmond Symphony, Petersburg Symphony, Virginia State University Band and Orchestra, Richmond Symphonic Winds, Richard Bland College Community Wind Ensemble, and Richmond Brass Consort. He remains active as a teacher, composer, arranger, soloist, and scholar.
