The Collection

The Gaylord Music Library collection seeks to meet the academic music needs of the Washington University community by providing a comprehensive collection of music materials. The Music Library holds (both fully cataloged and in process) over 100,500 books and scores, 40,500 recordings and tapes, 5,200 microform items and more than 24,000 pieces of sheet music. Particular strengths include:
  • Basic and research collections in music history and theory
  • Major composers' complete editions
  • Monumental collections
  • Study and playing scores
  • Chamber music with instrumental parts
The LP collection and some other, lesser used materials are housed at the West Campus Library. Materials at West Campus are available for use on sight at the West Campus Library, can be checked out there, or can be requested to be sent to Gaylord through the Libraries' online catalog by using the "Request" option.

Strong holdings have been acquired in Americana, Festschriften, early music, opera, and music literature.

A list of duplicate serials which we are offering to other libraries is available. Please cut and paste from the list to an email message for the periodical issues you are interested in having sent. This offer is to libraries only. Please reimburse the Washington University Libraries for the postage.
