Reserve Instructions for Faculty

Reserve collection in the library:

If you want to have books, photocopies, videotapes, other materials put on reserve for a course, please use our Reserve Request Form. If you prefer, use the printable reserve request form or contact the Biology Library, phone: 935-5405, email: biology@wumail.wustl.edu.

Electronic reserve (ERes):

Photocopies, notes, exams, Internet sites, etc., will usually be scanned or linked into ERes unless you ask us not to do this. Each ERes class has its own password; we will let you know what it is so you can tell your students. There are 3 options for adding materials to ERes:
  1. Send files as attachments or URL's to us (biology@wumail.wustl.edu) and we will put them on ERes for you. Be sure the files are in a format that most students can use, such as pdf, doc, ppt, txt, or htm/html. Mac users: be sure the Macintosh format is not checked when you process files for ERes.
  2. Give us a photocopy; we will scan, convert to pdf, and put on ERes for you.
  3. If you prefer, an account can be set up in ERes for you and/or your TA. Then you can add materials to ERes yourself. Contact biology library staff for more information or see ERes Help for Instructors
Tips when putting things on reserve:
  • Be clear with students about where items are available, for example, the Biology Library, another campus library, the Natural Sciences Learning Center, ERes, NSLC web site, or elsewhere "on the web."
  • If you distribute a syllabus, give us a paper or electronic copy.
  • If possible, consistently date or number items, such as, lecture notes, old exams, etc.
  • Contact Ruth Lewis to discuss presentations, targeted web pages or other ways we can assist you and your students. Library orientations seem most valuable when a specific assignment is imminent. Also, contact Ruth if Biology Library limited hours cause problems for your students. Since so many materials are available online, we are open on Sunday afternoons, and Becker Medical Library has a lot of relevant material, even off-campus students doing research for term papers have found our hours adequate, so far.
  • Bring us materials before you tell students they are "on reserve."
  • Copyright help: Guidance for Washington University Faculty regarding Reproducing Copyrighted Works for Use in Teaching | Washington University Copyright Guidelines for Library Reserves July 18, 2001
  • Linking to reserve lists: The URL for the list of materials on reserve in the biology library will be http://catalog.wustl.edu/search/r?biology+coursenumber or http://catalog.wustl.edu/search/p?instructorlastname
Most students will search ERes for their specific class. If you want the direct URL for your ERes materials for linking, please ask.
